PUG HISTORY

The pug dog has a rather murky beginning in the pages of history. Most historians agree that the breed began about 400 BC somewhere in China. The breed next showed-up in Japan, then finally Europe where it became a favorite of royalty.

In the sixteenth century, the pug dog became the official breed of the House of Orange in Holland. A pug saved the life of William, Prince of Orange, by barking at the approach of Spaniards and giving William a chance to make his escape. An effigy of William with his beloved pug is carved over his tomb.

In 1790, Josephine, wife of Napoleon, used her pug - Fortune - to carry messages under his collar to her husband during her imprisonment at Les Carmes.

The Dutch word for pugs is Mopshond. It means to grumble.

Germany called them Mops. In France they were known as Carlin.

The origin of the word pug was probably in Europe during the 1700s. Marmoset monkeys were popular  pets at the time and were called Pugs. Because Pug Dogs have such a flat, monkey-like face, they were also called pugs with the added word 'dog' to distinguish them from the marmoset.

The Pug became eligible for AKC registration in 1885.
